From the revered Vega Sicilia estate in Ribera del Duero, the Unico 2013 vintage embodies the meticulous artistry and time-honoured heritage of Spain’s most iconic winery. Only 210 of nearly 1,000 hectares are dedicated to vine cultivation, an exquisite mosaic of 64 micro-plots and 19 distinctive soil types, enriched by the Douro River's life-giving course.
The 2013 vintage was born of patience, precision, and perseverance. A season that demanded vigilance in the vineyard rewarded us with a wine of profound elegance, freshness, and complexity. Grapes were hand-harvested from 40 of the most prized hectares, destined solely for Unico, a wine that undergoes one of the world’s longest ageing processes, with over 10 years maturing in 225-liter French and American oak barrels, followed by time in 22,000-liter wooden vats.
This carefully choreographed ageing journey bestows Unico 2013 with extraordinary depth, texture, and nuance, each bottle a study in time, terroir, and transformation. Expect a silky, vertical profile with refined tannins, delicate red fruit, floral notes, and an underlying minerality that lingers elegantly on the palate.
Crafted for connoisseurs, Unico 2013 is a paradox of pleasure: immediately drinkable yet magnificently age-worthy, with a potential cellaring window of 40 to 60 years under optimal conditions (12–14°C and 60% humidity). Best served at 18°C to unlock its layered bouquet and luxurious finish.
Unico 2013 is not merely a wine, it is a collector's investment, a statement of taste, and a timeless addition to any fine wine cellar.
The History of Bodegas Vega-Sicilia – Legendary Ribera del Duero Wine Estate
Discover the rich history of Bodegas Vega-Sicilia, Spain’s most prestigious and iconic Ribera del Duero winery. Founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, a visionary who brought Bordeaux grape cuttings such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec to Spain, Vega Sicilia expertly combines these with the native Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grape. Nestled in the unique terroir of Ribera del Duero’s arid soils, this estate pioneered premium Spanish winemaking.
Under the ownership of Antonio Herrero from 1903, Vega Sicilia gained international acclaim, winning numerous awards. Since 1982, the Álvarez family has continued this legacy with meticulous vineyard management, focusing on low yields, green harvesting, and precise grape selection. The winery’s innovative ageing process, using a variety of French and American oak barrels, ensures complex, balanced wines that maintain vibrant fruit flavours without excessive oak influence.
Vega Sicilia’s renowned wine portfolio includes its flagship Único, a multi-vintage blend carefully aged for up to 10 years, the exquisite Único Reserva Especial, and the accessible Valbuena 5°, a five-year-aged Tinto Fino expression. These wines showcase the perfect blend of tradition and innovation, solidifying Vega Sicilia as a cornerstone of Ribera del Duero’s status as one of Spain’s top wine regions.
Additionally, Vega Sicilia oversees Bodegas Alion, Bodegas Pintia, Macán, and the Hungarian Tokaji estate Oremus, expanding its influence across Spain and beyond. Experience the legacy and excellence of Bodegas Vega-Sicilia, a symbol of Spanish fine wine craftsmanship.
