Experience one of Australia’s most iconic cool-climate red blends with the Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 2 2019, a wine that marries Rhône-style complexity with the finesse of the Yarra Valley. This medium-bodied, perfumed, and spice-driven red is crafted from old-vine Shiraz supported by Mataro (Mourvèdre) and lifted with fragrant Viognier.
Vineyard & Terroir
Grown in Gruyere, Yarra Valley, Victoria, on the north-facing slopes of the Warramate foothills, the fruit benefits from excellent exposure and natural drainage thanks to grey silty clay loam with gravel bands.
Vinification
Crafted with meticulous small-batch attention:
• Hand-picked and bunch-sorted.
• Destemmed to small open fermenters with maximum whole-berry retention.
• Select fermenters receive returned stalks for additional structure.
• Some ferments include frozen Viognier skins (occasionally Marsanne)
• Matured 12–15 months in French oak barriques (~30% new)
Tasting Notes
A refined, elegant Rhône-inspired blend delivering layers of red and blue fruits, exotic spice, and silky structure. Medium-bodied yet incredibly complex, this vintage displays exceptional purity, balance, and age-worthy finesse.
The Yarra Valley wine industry flourished in the 1800s, but by the 1920s many vineyards gave way to sheep farming. It was the vision of Dr Bailey Carrodus, a plant physiologist and Roseworthy winemaking graduate, who revived the region as one of Australia’s most celebrated wine destinations.
In 1969, Dr Carrodus purchased land at the foot of the Warramate Hills and, by 1973, released the first vintages of his now iconic Yarra Yering Dry Red Wine No.1 and Dry Red Wine No.2. These wines quickly became benchmarks for premium Australian red blends, admired for their elegance and sophistication.
Dr Carrodus crafted Yarra Yering wines until his passing in 2008, when the estate was acquired by long time admirers Ed Peter and Reid Bosward. Today, the winery continues his legacy under the guidance of Sarah Crowe, named Winemaker of the Year in 2017 by James Halliday, ensuring Yarra Yering remains synonymous with luxury Yarra Valley wines.
