Marlborough Vineyards & Terroir
Fruit for this Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from Tinpot Hut’s home vineyard at Blind River in the Awatere Valley, along with select sites in the Lower Wairau coastal sub-region, located approximately 30 minutes north.
The Blind River vineyard sits at just 28 metres above sea level and less than a mile from the Pacific Ocean. Cooling afternoon easterly sea breezes moderate summer temperatures, enhancing aromatic development and natural acidity. Soils consist of rich loamy topsoil (500–750mm) over wind-blown clay loess.
In the Lower Wairau vineyards, deep fertile silt loam soils, formed over thousands of years near the coast, contribute to ripe tropical flavour expression. All vines are trained using vertical shoot positioning, ensuring optimal canopy management and fruit quality.
2024 Vintage Conditions
The 2024 Marlborough wine vintage was shaped by El Niño conditions, bringing localised spring frosts, cooler flowering periods, and a notably dry summer. These conditions resulted in low yields, similar to the 2020–2021 growing season, producing grapes with excellent flavour concentration and balanced acidity at harvest.

Winemaking & Fermentation
Grapes were machine harvested at night to preserve freshness and immediately transported to the winery. Gentle pressing minimised skin contact, maintaining purity and finesse. The juice was cold settled for 48 hours, then racked into stainless steel tanks for fermentation.
Cool temperature fermentation was carefully managed to retain the wine’s vibrant aromatics, crisp acidity, and varietal intensity, hallmarks of premium Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
Tasting Notes
This Tinpot Hut Sauvignon Blanc 2024 is richly textured yet finely balanced. The nose opens with classic Marlborough aromas of blackcurrant bud and freshly cut thyme, layered with subtle flinty and saline notes from the Blind River fruit.
On the palate, tropical flavours of passion fruit and ripe melon from the Wairau Valley vineyards add depth and complexity. The finish is elegant, fresh, and lingering, with bright acidity and mineral tension.
The Tinpot Hut story began in 2003 when winemaker Fiona Turner and her husband Hamish established their own 20-hectare vineyard in Marlborough’s emerging sub-region of Blind River. Fiona named the project after a historic Marlborough mustering hut, the ‘Tinpot Hut,’ linking the area’s sheep farming past with its current state as one of the world’s most dynamic wine regions. Fruit for the Tinpot Hut wines is sourced from Fiona’s ‘Home Block,’ supplemented by grapes from carefully selected vineyards. Fiona is assisted by Matt Thomson (of Blank Canvas), a friend and colleague with whom she has worked for many years.
