The 2019 vintage of San Marzano 'Anniversario 62' Primitivo di Manduria Riserva benefited from a rainy winter that replenished soil moisture, followed by a mild spring with limited rainfall. This set the stage for a hot, dry, and windy summer, reducing disease pressure and ensuring healthy vine growth. The pronounced diurnal temperature swings encouraged even ripening, resulting in grapes bursting with rich flavours and balanced natural acidity. Harvest began five days earlier than the previous year, capturing the perfect ripeness for this exceptional Italian red wine.
Vineyard Location and Terroir:
Sourced exclusively from the heart of the D.O.P. Primitivo di Manduria region in San Marzano and Sava, this wine comes from ancient vineyards planted with 5,000 bush vines per hectare. The vineyard soils are predominantly red, calcareous, and iron oxide-rich, contributing to the grape's vibrant character. The Mediterranean climate features consistently high temperatures, minimal rainfall, and significant day-to-night temperature variation, which enhances the grapes’ flavour concentration and complexity. The grapes are carefully handpicked in late September to preserve their quality.
Winemaking Process:
Only the finest grapes from select vineyard plots are chosen to craft this Primitivo di Manduria Riserva. After meticulous hand-harvesting at peak ripeness, fermentation occurs under strict temperature control between 24-26°C for approximately 15 days. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in stainless steel vats before maturing gracefully for 18 months in a blend of French and American oak barrels. This meticulous process imparts depth and refined oak nuances to the wine.
