Discover the Elegance of Greywacke Pinot Noir 2019 – A Marlborough Masterpiece
Crafted from premium fruit grown exclusively in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys, the Greywacke Pinot Noir 2019 reflects the terroir of the iconic Yarrum Vineyard on the Brancott and Ben Morven ridge. This refined New Zealand red wine is made from a blend of Dijon clones (115, 667, 777), along with select parcels of UCD5 and AM 10/5, producing a wine of intense depth and aromatic complexity.
Grown in wind-blown loess soils with varied gravel content, the grapes benefit from clay-loam terrain and high-density hillside planting (3,800 vines per hectare), allowing for optimal vine expression and complexity.
The 2019 vintage delivered exceptional quality despite lower yields. A mild, wet spring transitioned into a warm and dry summer, allowing grapes to ripen evenly. Careful water management and expert viticulture ensured the fruit achieved optimum phenolic ripeness, resulting in a concentrated and expressive wine.
Vinified using traditional techniques, the hand-harvested grapes were sorted and fermented with indigenous yeasts, with a portion fermented as whole bunches for added structure. The wine matured in 30% new French oak barriques for 11 months, with each clone aged separately before the final blend.
Tasting Notes
This beautifully structured Pinot Noir is rich, fragrant, and full-bodied, reminiscent of a Black Forest cake layered with juicy cherries, Black Doris plums, and a blueberry compote twist, accented by nutmeg, cloves, cedar spice, and a hint of smoky nuts. The palate is generous and supple with fine tannins, luxurious fruit weight, and a lingering, spice-driven finish.
