Harvest & Vinification: A Remarkable Vintage Year
The 2017 vintage began with an unusually dry and cool winter, leading to early budburst around March 10th. Limited spring rainfall, just 7mm in April in Pinhão, accelerated vine development and led to early flowering in May. June brought intense heat, prompting early veraison around June 18th. Despite continued dryness through September, cooler August nights preserved acidity and balance.
Harvesting commenced early, with Quinta do Panascal beginning on September 6, followed by Cruzeiro and Santo António estates. These were among the earliest harvests in recent decades. Thick-skinned grapes yielded deeply coloured, concentrated musts. Though yields were low, quality was outstanding, with many lots showing exceptional promise from the outset.

Tasting Notes: Rich, Layered & Structured
In the glass, Fonseca 2017 displays a deep purple-black core with a magenta rim. The bouquet bursts with intense dark berry fruit, plum, blackberry, and cassis, lifted by vibrant red fruit and an underlying schist minerality. Subtle layers of balsamic herbs and cedar wood provide aromatic depth.
On the palate, this vintage Port is velvety yet structured, with robust tannins and fresh acidity. A dense core of ripe black fruit unfolds into a long, complex finish, characteristic of Fonseca's iconic vintage Ports.
