Corte Giara Amarone della Valpolicella La Groletta 2022 is a powerful yet elegant Amarone red wine from Valpolicella, crafted using the traditional Appassimento method. Produced in the prestigious hills of Veneto, this premium Italian wine delivers exceptional concentration, structure, and aromatic complexity, making it a standout choice for collectors and Amarone enthusiasts.
Vineyard & Terroir
The grapes for this Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG are sourced from hillside vineyards in Colline di Grezzana, Montorio, and Marcellise, within the Valpolicella region. The vineyards sit at 180–250 metres above sea level, with south-east facing exposures that encourage optimal ripening.
The soils are chalky and well-drained, contributing to finesse and balance. Vines are trained using the traditional pergola system, planted at a density of approximately 3,000 vines per hectare. With an average vine age of 31 years, yields are naturally limited, enhancing flavour intensity and depth.
Vintage Conditions – 2022
The 2022 Valpolicella vintage began with a cold, dry winter, followed by an unusually warm early spring, triggering budbreak nearly 20 days ahead of the seasonal average. A severe summer heatwave made careful canopy management and emergency irrigation essential for vine survival. Although yields were below average, the remaining fruit showed exceptional concentration and quality, ideal for producing a rich and structured Amarone wine.
Winemaking – Traditional Appassimento Method
Harvested in late September, the grapes were dried for three months at Allegrini’s Appassimento centre in Fumane, a humidity-controlled drying facility. During this period, the grapes lost approximately 40% of their weight, intensifying sugars, aromas, and structure.
After gentle crushing, fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks at 8–22°C for 22–24 days, with daily pump-overs to extract colour and tannins.
The wine was aged for five months in stainless steel, followed by 15 months in oak, half in large Slavonian oak barrels and half in second-use barriques, and an additional six months in bottle before release.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby red and intensely aromatic, Corte Giara Amarone della Valpolicella La Groletta 2022 opens with expressive notes of black cherry and freshly ground black pepper, followed by subtle balsamic, herbal, and spice nuances.
The palate is dry, full-bodied, and beautifully balanced, with vibrant acidity complementing the richness of the fruit. Smooth yet powerful, this is a refined Amarone with excellent ageing potential and a long, elegant finish.
