Discover the rich complexity of Colome Estate Salta Malbec 2022, a high-altitude Malbec from the renowned Calchaquí Valley in Argentina. Grown at elevations ranging from 1,700 to 3,111 metres above sea level, this Argentinian Malbec wine benefits from intense UV rays and dramatic temperature swings, creating thick grape skins that deliver deep colour and concentrated flavours.
Vineyard Terroir & Climate:
Crafted from grapes harvested across four unique vineyards, La Brava Estate, Colomé Estate, El Arenal Estate, and Altura Máxima, this Malbec features a blend of sandy, clay, granite, and volcanic soils. The dry climate with an average rainfall of only 120-160 mm and significant day-night temperature variation preserves the wine’s natural acidity and fresh fruit character.
Vinification:
Handpicked during March-April 2022, the grapes underwent a slow maceration at cool temperatures followed by fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged for 15 months in French oak barrels (15% new), resulting in a beautifully balanced Malbec with elegant tannins and a layered structure.
Tasting Notes:
This 2022 Malbec pours a vibrant deep red and offers intense aromas of ripe blackberries, red fruits, floral notes, and subtle spice. The palate reveals fresh, juicy black fruit flavours complemented by hints of pepper and well-integrated oak, finishing with crisp acidity and bold tannins for a rich, full-bodied experience.
Ideal for lovers of premium Argentine high-altitude Malbec wines seeking bold flavour with elegant complexity.
Founded in 1831, Bodega Colomé is Argentina’s oldest working winery, famous for its high-altitude vineyards in the Upper Calchaquí Valley. Its ‘Altura Máxima’ vineyard, planted at 3,111 metres above sea level, is one of the highest commercial vineyards worldwide, producing some of the finest Argentinian Malbec wines.
Located in Northern Argentina, Bodega Colomé’s historic vineyards include pre-phylloxera Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon vines introduced in 1854. Since 2001, Swiss entrepreneur Donald Hess has revitalised the estate and village, championed sustainable wine production and supported the local community.
The winery’s three main vineyards, La Brava (1,750m), Finca Colomé (2,300m), and Altura Máxima (3,111m) benefit from intense sunlight and dramatic temperature swings, producing grapes with thick skins, vibrant acidity, and complex flavours.
Under French winemaker Thibaut Delmotte’s expert care since 2005, Bodega Colomé has become a top-rated First Growth Argentinian winery, known for its elegant, balanced wines with rich colour and supple tannins.
