Cederberg Five Generations Chenin Blanc 2021 is a premium South African Chenin Blanc that reflects the unique terroir of the remote Cederberg wine region. Produced in limited quantities, only 15 carefully selected French oak barrels were used to create just 8,000 bottles, making this wine a true expression of heritage and craftsmanship.
The Nieuwoudt Five Generations range represents generations of winemaking excellence in the Cederberg Mountains, an area known for high-altitude vineyards and cool-climate conditions that enhance freshness, complexity, and longevity in the wine.
Winemaking
The grapes for this Cederberg Chenin Blanc are hand-harvested in the early morning at 23.5° Balling to preserve natural acidity and fruit purity. A portion of the grapes is whole-bunch pressed, while the remainder is destemmed and crushed for extended skin contact, adding texture and depth.
After a day of settling, the juice is transferred to 400-litre French oak barrels, where natural fermentation occurs over 40 to 60 days under strict temperature control. The wine is matured for 10 months on the lees, with monthly bâtonnage to enhance mouthfeel and complexity.
No malolactic fermentation is undertaken, allowing the wine to retain its vibrant acidity and freshness.
Barrel composition consists of:
• 33% first-fill French oak
• 33% second-fill French oak
• 33% third-fill French oak
All barrels are tight-grain, medium toast, contributing subtle oak integration rather than overpowering the fruit.
Tasting Notes
This complex, oak-aged Chenin Blanc displays elegant aromas of baked apple, citrus zest, and delicate spice, layered with hints of roasted almonds. The palate shows a refined balance between fruit concentration and restrained oak influence, leading to a creamy yet lively finish with excellent structure and depth.
