Experience the elegance and complexity of Casa Ferreirinha Quinta da Leda Douro Tinto 2019, a premium Portuguese red wine crafted from a meticulous blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cão grapes. Grown in the prestigious Quinta da Leda estate in the Douro Superior, just 12km from the Spanish border, this exceptional vintage showcases the unique terroir of Portugal's most iconic wine region.
Sustainably Grown Grapes from Schist-Rich Vineyards
The 170-hectare Quinta da Leda vineyard is a mosaic of south-facing slopes, each carefully matched to specific grape varieties. The schist soils and cool nights of the Douro Superior contribute to the wine’s structure and depth, with vine roots reaching deep to draw essential nutrients during hot, dry summers.
2019 Vintage, A Year of Balance and Freshness
Described by head winemaker Luís Sottomayor as “a very good year, with freshness and great balance,” the 2019 growing season was marked by a cooler, drier winter, replenishing spring rains, and a mild summer that allowed for slow ripening. The result? Grapes with intense fruit character and refreshing acidity.
Traditional Portuguese Winemaking Techniques
Hand-harvested grapes were destemmed and gently crushed before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Co-fermentation of the varietals enhances integration, while malolactic fermentation in old oak barrels brings roundness and complexity. Aged for 18 months in 50% new French oak barrels, then further matured for 6 months before bottling.
Tasting Notes
This full-bodied Douro red wine reveals rich aromas of ripe red and black fruits, with elegant notes of cedar, tobacco, violet, and rose petals. On the palate, expect velvety tannins, a vibrant acidity, and a long, lingering finish that reflects the wine’s complexity and pedigree.
Casa Ferreirinha is widely recognised as the pioneering winery that sparked the quality revolution of Douro still red wines, becoming the first Douro wine producer exclusively dedicated to crafting premium still wines rather than traditional Port wine.
Established in 1952 by renowned winemaker Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, the estate released the very first vintage of Portugal’s most prestigious and historically significant red wine, the legendary ‘Barca-Velha’, in that same year. Today, the expert winemaking team at Casa Ferreirinha is led by Luís Sottomayor, a skilled oenologist who trained under the guidance of Fernando Nicolau de Almeida and continues to uphold and advance his visionary legacy in Portuguese winemaking.
