Crafted from select vineyard sites across Santa Barbara County and the Russian River Valley, the 2021 Au Bon Climat ‘Isabelle’ Pinot Noir showcases the artistry of small-batch, handcrafted winemaking. Sourced from renowned vineyards including Bien Nacido (Santa Maria Valley), Rancho La Cuna and Los Alamos Vineyard (Los Alamos Valley), Sanford & Benedict (Sta. Rita Hills), and Lala Panzi (Russian River Valley), each lot is fermented and aged separately to preserve its unique character.
Every step of the winemaking process reflects over 40 years of expertise in crafting high-end Santa Barbara Pinot Noir. Grapes are hand-picked and hand-sorted in the vineyard. Open-top fermentation and gentle, manual punch-downs are used to extract complexity without sacrificing elegance. The finest barrels are selected after extended tasting and re-evaluation, ensuring only the best lots make it into the final blend. Aged in new François Frères French oak barrels, this wine is never pumped over, only moved by gravity to protect its delicate texture.
Tasting Notes:
The 2021 vintage offers layered aromas of candied raspberry, cherry, and blood orange, with subtle notes of anise, wet stone, and bay leaf. On the palate, you will find hints of baking spice and pastry crust, balanced by a firm structure and vibrant acidity. Medium-full bodied, the Isabelle Pinot Noir is a wine built to age gracefully, growing in complexity over time.
Whether you are building a premium wine collection or searching for a sophisticated red wine for a special occasion, Au Bon Climat Isabelle Pinot Noir 2021 is a standout expression of California coastal Pinot Noir.
Founded in 1982 by the late and legendary winemaker Jim Clendenen, Au Bon Climat Winery has become a cornerstone of California's Central Coast wine scene. Specializing in cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines with a Burgundian influence, Au Bon Climat (often affectionately called “ABC”) continues to set the standard for elegant, age-worthy wines from this region.
Jim Clendenen, remembered as one of the most charismatic and influential winemakers of his generation, discovered his passion for wine during a life-changing trip to Burgundy while studying law at UC Santa Barbara in the 1970s. Inspired by the refined elegance of French wines, Jim returned to California with a vision: to craft Burgundy-style Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that could stand shoulder to shoulder with the greats of Europe, yet reflect the unique terroir of the California Central Coast.
Translating to “a well-exposed vineyard,” the name Au Bon Climat perfectly describes the ideal growing conditions of the winery’s vineyard sites. Nestled in the coastal hills of Santa Barbara County, these vineyards benefit from cooling Pacific Ocean breezes and early morning fog, creating the perfect environment for producing balanced, nuanced California Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines
