Founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, Château Musar stands as one of the Middle East’s most celebrated wineries. Drawing inspiration from Lebanon’s remarkable 6,000-year winemaking heritage and the timeless traditions of Bordeaux, Château Musar has become a global symbol of elegance, resilience, and authenticity.
A Family Tradition Rooted in History
The Hochar family, of French Crusader descent dating back to the 12th century, has nurtured a profound passion for fine wine across generations. During the 1920s, Gaston Hochar began crafting what he described as “wines with noblesse,” impressing French military officers stationed in Lebanon and Syria under the League of Nations mandate.
A defining moment in the winery’s history came during World War II, when Major Ronald Barton of Château Langoa-Barton formed a lasting friendship with Gaston Hochar. This connection strengthened Château Musar’s bond with Bordeaux and helped shape its distinctive Bordeaux-inspired style.
Serge Hochar and International Recognition
The legacy continued with Gaston’s eldest son, Serge Hochar, who studied oenology under the legendary Émile Peynaud at Bordeaux University. In 1959, Serge became head winemaker and devoted 18 years to perfecting Château Musar’s iconic red blend, a wine that would go on to define Lebanese fine wine on the world stage.
Even during Lebanon’s Civil War (1975–1990), Serge’s dedication never wavered. In recognition of his extraordinary perseverance and contribution to wine, he was named ‘Man of the Year’ in 1984 by Decanter, the first time the award was ever presented.
The Third Generation
Today, Château Musar remains proudly family-owned and operated. Brothers Gaston and Marc Hochar oversee winery operations and international growth, while Ronald Hochar contributes his expertise in law and logistics. Together, they continue to uphold the philosophy and standards that have defined Château Musar for nearly a century.
The Bekaa Valley Terroir
Château Musar’s wines are crafted from organically grown, indigenous grape varieties cultivated in high-altitude vineyards (approximately 1,000 meters above sea level) in Lebanon’s renowned Bekaa Valley.
The winery follows a non-interventionist approach, allowing the character of the terroir to express itself naturally. The result is a collection of complex, elegant red blends and distinctive white wines celebrated worldwide for their depth, individuality, and remarkable ageing potential.
